Ramos Research Institute Presents Innovative Research at 2024 Pi Sigma Alpha National Student Research Conference

ITHACA, NEW YORK — March 7, 2024 — The Ramos Research Institute (RRI) proudly announces the participation of its Director, Alejandro J. Ramos, and Research Assistant, Emma Grady, at the 2024 Pi Sigma Alpha National Student Research Conference held from February 16-18, 2024, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

The annual Pi Sigma Alpha National Student Research Conference provides a dynamic platform for students to showcase their research, engage in professional development activities, and network with peers and professionals in the field. This year's event, featuring in-person panels, poster sessions, and virtual discussions, proved to be an enriching experience for all participants.

Alejandro J. Ramos, Director of the Ramos Research Institute, served as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the overarching study and presented the survey results at the conference via a poster, titled "Empowering Citizenship in the Digital Era: The Nexus of Media Literacy and Civic Engagement." This study delves into the critical relationship between civic engagement and media literacy, highlighting how media literacy plays a pivotal role in fostering informed citizenship and active participation in democracy through original polling data. The success of the survey has proved valuable for, “A Path to Informed Democracy,” studying the intricacies of the marriage between civic engagement and media literacy.

Commenting on the study, Alejandro J. Ramos stated, "It was an honor to lead this research effort and present our findings at the Pi Sigma Alpha National Student Research Conference. Our study underscores the importance of media literacy in shaping a well-informed and engaged citizenry, crucial for the vitality of democracy in the digital era."

This was Ramos’ second time in attendance at the Pi Sigma Alpha conference. Presenting his award-winning thesis on the evolution of the Hispanic vote in the United States “The Great Realignment: Investigating the American Hispanic and Latino Vote,” just last year.

Emma Grady, Research Assistant at the Ramos Research Institute and Senior at Sacred Heart University, played a vital role in the development of the research presented at the conference. She presented the paper titled "A Path to Informed Democracy: Bridging Civic Engagement and Media Literacy," which explores the symbiotic relationship between civic engagement and media literacy. Her presentation highlighted the role of media literacy in nurturing informed civic participation and offered insights and recommendations for promoting media literacy as a cornerstone of effective civic engagement in the digital age.

Reflecting on her presentation, Emma Grady shared, "Attending the Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society Academic Conference was an enriching experience highlighted by the opportunity to present a paper I worked on as a research assistant titled ‘A Path to Informed Democracy: Bridging Civic Engagement and Media Literacy’. The positive atmosphere and engaged audience created a conducive environment for meaningful discussions and insightful feedback. Additionally, my role as a research intern at RRI enhanced my learning experience relating to research and serve as a fanatic platform for personal and professional growth.”

Ramos made note of the success of the weekend, “Both presentations went extremely well. I am very proud of Emma not only for her hard work as a research assistant but for her incredible presentation down in Washington. RRI's internship program was conceptualized with the idea that students would be able to present at conferences and exponentially grow as individuals and professionals. Emma proved that our model works!"
