Ramos Research Institute Welcomes an Exceptional Cohort of Fall 2024 Interns

ITHACA, NEW YORK – September 2, 2024 — The Ramos Research Institute (RRI) is proud to announce the induction of a diverse and talented group of interns for the Fall 2024 semester. With nearly 1,200 applicants vying for a limited number of spots, this year’s selection process was more competitive than ever. The chosen interns exemplify the academic excellence, passion for public policy, and commitment to research that RRI values.

This fall, RRI welcomes the following interns:

Kelly Conroy (Fairfield University) - Double majoring in Politics and International Studies, with minors in Marketing and Campaigns & Elections, Kelly brings a robust understanding of global issues and electoral processes. Her experience studying abroad in Florence, Italy, has further enriched her intercultural communication skills, making her an asset to the team.

Ellen Dong (Boston University) - As a student of Journalism and Data Science, Ellen combines rigorous data examination with impactful storytelling. Her experience in project management and hardware engineering, coupled with her dedication to the public good, will play a crucial role in RRI’s research initiatives. Reflecting on her new role, Ellen shared, "I feel nervous about taking on the research internship position, but these nerves stem from an incredible sense of honor in being part of RRI. It's wonderful that this institution supports individuals like myself, who have no prior experience in research; otherwise, I wouldn't feel as comfortable stepping into this field. By the end of this experience, I hope to gain the skills necessary for future research positions and receive the mentorship needed to advance my career after college."

Emily Garcia (Brigham Young University-Idaho) - With a strong focus on marketing research and societal trends, Emily excels in both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Her commitment to community service and understanding of market behavior will enhance the depth of RRI’s research outputs.

Megan Thompson (University of Texas at Austin) - Pursuing dual degrees in Government and Sociology, Megan has a keen interest in environmental, energy, and national security policy. Her previous experience as a research assistant and her involvement in policy research will contribute significantly to RRI’s mission. Speaking about her new role, Megan said, “I’m excited to develop my research and professional skills throughout this internship, and I look forward to collaborating with this diverse group of interns and scholars.”

James Valentín (University of Iowa) - Specializing in Public Policy and Social Science Analytics, James has honed his skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods. His experience with policy briefs and narrative writing will aid RRI in producing compelling and insightful research.

Vidya Vedula (Emory University) - A junior double majoring in Economics/Mathematics and Public Policy & Analysis, Vidya is on a pre-law track with a focus on electoral processes and economic disparities. Her analytical skills and commitment to justice will support RRI’s ongoing projects in meaningful ways.

Fujia (Elaine) Xiang (Colby College) - Majoring in Government and Sociology with a minor in Philosophy, Fujia is passionate about social dynamics and policy analysis. Her experience in conducting research on cultural factors and social norms will provide a unique perspective to RRI’s research endeavors.

This cohort of interns is poised to make significant contributions to the Ramos Research Institute’s mission of advancing public policy research and education. “We are thrilled to have such an extraordinary group of young scholars join us this fall,” said Alejandro J. Ramos, Executive Director of RRI. “Their diverse backgrounds, coupled with their shared commitment to public policy and research, align perfectly with our goals at the Institute.”

As they embark on their internships, these students will engage in cutting-edge research, collaborate on impactful projects, and contribute to the ongoing work that RRI conducts in shaping public policy and promoting civic engagement.
